Working in Australia

Australia can suit qualified healthcare, engineering, technology and trade applicants. Employer sponsorship and points-based migration are different routes. Sydney provides the cost benchmark here, but the actual employer’s location can change both your job options and budget substantially.

Preparing your application

Nurses and allied health professionals

Check Australian registration and the evidence needed for your overseas qualification. Ask whether the employer supports registration and the relocation period.

Engineering and technology

Match your duties to the relevant occupation rather than relying only on the job title. Check sponsorship, experience and any skills-assessment requirements.

Skilled trades

Licensing can differ by state and trade. Establish whether assessment or supervised work is needed before you can perform the full role.

Finding a job in Australia

Search employer career pages and Australian job boards with clear sponsorship information. Ask whether the company has a specific nominated role for you. Do not assume a vacancy on an occupation list is an available job or a guaranteed visa.

Documents & Requirements

Skills in Demand Core Skills

For nominations from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, the income threshold is AUD 79,423 a year. The offer must also meet the annual market salary rate for the job. A lower national minimum wage does not satisfy this visa test.

Specialist Skills

The corresponding Specialist Skills threshold is AUD 146,576 a year. Labour agreements and concessions have their own conditions. Check which stream the employer will nominate you under.

Choose sponsorship or another eligible route

For employer sponsorship, identify the applicable Skills in Demand stream. Points-based skilled visas use a separate process and selection criteria.

Check occupation and evidence

The Core Skills stream uses an occupation list and requires relevant experience, along with other criteria. Verify the current salary threshold and any assessment requirement for the role.

Complete nomination and visa application

The employer’s nomination and your visa application are separate parts of the process. Follow health, character, language and document instructions for your case.

Supporting documents

  • Passport
  • Qualifications
  • Detailed employment references
  • English-language evidence, if required
  • Skills assessment, where applicable
  • Professional registration, where applicable

Check document requirements before paying for an examination.

Check the official application requirements

Alongside the destination application, complete the Philippine departure requirements for your employment arrangement.

Staying longer

Some temporary skilled workers may later qualify for another visa, including a permanent route. That requires meeting the rules at the time. Sponsorship today should not be marketed as guaranteed permanent residence.

Remote work

Remote days for an Australian employer do not remove visa requirements. Working online for an overseas client while physically in Australia also requires checking the conditions of your status.

If you want overseas clients while staying at home, compare remote jobs and other ways to earn money online.

Living costs in Sydney

Australian rent is often advertised weekly, so multiply by 52 and divide by 12 for a monthly budget. Sydney can be expensive for a solo renter. Regional locations may reduce housing costs but can increase car dependence. Ask whether quoted compensation includes superannuation or is paid on top of it.

NET SALARY BENCHMARK

Average net salary in Sydney

The saved 9 June 2026 snapshot reports an average monthly net salary of ₱260,200 (AUD 5,955 after tax) in Sydney. This crowd-reported city average is a comparison benchmark, not an expected salary for a Filipino worker or a particular occupation.

Compare your own offer using the amount you will receive after tax, employee contributions and payroll deductions. Housing, transport and meals included by the employer can change how much you keep.

LIFE AND PROTECTIONS

Rights at work and beyond

Australia has strong civil liberties and employment protections, but underpayment and migrant-worker exploitation still occur. Know your applicable wage arrangements and keep your own timesheets. Fair Work information can help you understand employment rights.

PESOPAL’S VIEW

Is Australia worth considering?

A strong option for a suitably qualified worker with a real sponsor or another eligible skilled route. Registration costs, housing and the difference between salary and superannuation deserve close attention.

How this rating is calculated

Ratings compare political rights and civil liberties with entry preparation. City-average net salary benchmarks are provided for context and do not determine the rating. The strongest weighted score gets 5.0 and every other destination is scored relative to it.

Rights component = 1 + 4 × Freedom House score ÷ 100. Weighted score = (4 × rights component + 3 × entry preparation) ÷ 7. Entry preparation is 3 for employer-led routes with occupation conditions and 2 where language, recognition, selective sponsorship or processing restrictions add substantial preparation. Rating = 5 × weighted score ÷ the highest weighted score, bounded from 1 to 5. This is not an earnings or savings ranking.

Rights component 4.76/5 · Entry preparation 2/5.

Questions about working in Australia

Is the Skills in Demand visa the old TSS visa?

The Skills in Demand framework replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage framework for subclass 482 in December 2024. Use the current stream rules rather than an old recruitment brochure.

Does being on an occupation list guarantee a visa?

No. The role, sponsor, experience, pay and other application conditions still matter. An occupation list is an eligibility component, not a job offer.

How do I convert weekly rent into a monthly amount?

Multiply the weekly figure by 52, then divide by 12. Multiplying by four understates the yearly cost because most months are longer than four weeks.

What does salary plus super mean?

Superannuation is a retirement contribution rather than ordinary spendable monthly pay. Ask whether the quoted package includes it so you can compare cash salary accurately.

Should I consider a regional job?

Yes, where it suits your occupation and visa route. Check transport, housing availability and access to services. Lower rent can be offset by needing a car.

Can a recruiter promise permanent residence?

No recruiter can guarantee the outcome. Separate the current employment offer from any future migration application and assess both sets of conditions.
