Working in Italy

Italy is possible for Filipinos with an eligible employer, but ordinary recruitment can depend on quota access and timing. Machine operation and selected service professions show reported gaps. Establishing the correct entry category is more useful than relying on a recruiter’s promise of a visa.

In-demand fields

  • Plant and machine operation. Industrial operating occupations feature in reported shortages and merit a focused search by equipment and experience.
  • Sales roles. Sales occupations also appear in the profile, although Italian communication and a qualifying hiring route can limit overseas access.
  • Selected professional services. Some legal, social and cultural professions report gaps; assess local qualifications and language before pursuing these specialised roles.

Major challenges

  • Quota or exemption. The employer must identify whether the job uses the annual quota programme or a separate exempt category.
  • Employer clearance. A nulla osta precedes the work visa; a promised quota place is not the same as issued clearance.
  • Italian and contract terms. Check the language needed on the job and the guaranteed hours, especially where the offer is temporary or seasonal.

Documents & Requirements

Subordinate-employment visa

Main requirement

The employer must obtain a nulla osta. Many ordinary employment entries depend on the annual quota programme; some categories are outside quotas.

Work permission

Apply for the employment visa after clearance, then complete the residence-permit procedure after arrival.

Main documents

  • Completed visa form and recent photo
  • Current passport, biographical copy and previous passport if available
  • Employer’s invitation or employment letter
  • Nulla osta from the immigration desk
  • Visa fee

Check whether the particular job is quota-based or exempt before paying for arrangements. Use the Italian Embassy in Manila checklist.

Living costs in Rome

Rome costs may not reflect a job in northern industrial areas or a live-in care arrangement. Compare hours, rest periods and accommodation separately rather than valuing a room as unrestricted cash pay.

Average net salary in Rome

Numbeo’s Rome benchmark is ₱121,800 (EUR 1,711) per month after tax.

Employment contract. Check the applicable national collective agreement, job grade, hours and annual payments. There is no single statutory national minimum wage to use as a salary quote for every Italian occupation.

Employer permission. The employer must follow the relevant nulla osta and entry process. Contract compliance and the employer’s ability to hire are part of the assessment, separate from a city-average salary.
