Work Abroad in Japan

Japan offers structured work routes, but choosing the right occupation and preparing your Japanese are often more important than choosing Tokyo first.

Working in Japan

Japan is worth researching for manufacturing, hospitality, care and professional work. The Specified Skilled Worker route is designed around particular sectors and skills. Software and other degree-based professional roles can follow a different residence category. A job outside Tokyo may offer a better balance of housing costs and income.

Jobs to look into

Manufacturing and food production

For a Specified Skilled Worker vacancy, identify the exact sector and skills examination. Ask about shift premiums, accommodation and deductions from pay.

Care and hospitality

Language skills affect both entry requirements and daily work. Care work also needs vocabulary and training suited to supporting people safely.

Software and technical roles

Check the residence category and qualification requirements with the employer. Japanese ability can widen your options even where the working team uses English.

How to find a job

Work visa and residence

Choose the occupation route

Do not confuse Specified Skilled Worker employment with technical intern training or a professional residence category. The permitted activities differ.

Complete required tests

Specified Skilled Worker applicants generally need a relevant skills test and Japanese-language test, with exceptions for qualifying prior training. Some sectors have additional requirements.

Agree terms and apply

Get a written explanation of wages and deductions. Work with the employer on the Certificate of Eligibility and visa process, then complete the Philippine departure requirements.

Documents to prepare

Prepare your passport, exam results where applicable, education and employment records, and the contract. Check translations and the employer’s Certificate of Eligibility document list before submitting.

Check the official application requirements

Alongside the destination application, complete the Philippine departure requirements for your employment arrangement.

Staying longer

Residence categories have different renewal and family rules. Specified Skilled Worker (i) is not the same long-term arrangement as every professional route. Plan around the category on your documents rather than a recruiter’s general promise of permanent residence.

Remote work

A Japanese employer offering remote days is still a local employment arrangement. A digital-nomad or visitor route has different conditions and should not be used as a substitute for the permission needed for a local job.

If you want overseas clients while staying at home, compare remote jobs and other ways to earn money online.

Living costs in Tokyo

Japan’s rail network makes many urban commutes practical, but worksite location still matters. Initial rental costs can include a deposit, agent fees and other charges. Employer housing may simplify arrival, although you should ask for the monthly deduction and the rules for moving out.

LIFE AND PROTECTIONS

Rights at work and beyond

Japan has a high civil-liberties score, but migrants can still face discrimination and workplace problems. Equal-treatment rules do not make every recruiter reliable. Keep a record of actual hours and deductions, and ask for explanations in a language you understand.

PESOPAL’S VIEW

Is Japan worth considering?

A good destination to investigate if you are willing to invest in language and occupation-specific preparation. Compare regional employers as well as Tokyo to avoid making rent the deciding cost.

How this rating is calculated

Relative comparison across the destinations listed here. We first combine political rights and civil liberties (40%), the city rent-to-pay balance (30%) and entry preparation (30%). The highest combined score becomes 5.0 and the lowest 1.0, with the others spaced proportionally between them. A 5.0 means strongest in this selection under these criteria, not a perfect destination. Ratings can change when data or the selection changes. They do not measure job availability or predict visa approval. Entry preparation is an editorial assessment, so compare the actual visa route and your own job offer as well.

Calculation details. Rights component = 1 + 4 × Freedom House score ÷ 100. Housing component = 5 − 5 × monthly rent ÷ monthly net pay, bounded between 1 and 5. Entry preparation is 3 for employer-led routes with occupation conditions and 2 where language, recognition, selective sponsorship or processing restrictions add substantial preparation. The weighted total is rescaled as 1 + 4 × (total − lowest total) ÷ (highest total − lowest total), then rounded to one decimal. Countries with the same total receive the same rating. If every total is equal, all receive 3.0.

Rights component 4.84/5 · Housing component 3.72/5 · Entry preparation 2/5.

Questions about working in Japan

Do I need Japanese before applying?

Many Specified Skilled Worker roles require a Japanese-language test, and practical language ability matters at work. Some professional employers recruit in English, but that does not mean every role is English-only.

Is technical intern training the same as a work visa?

It is a different status with a different purpose. Ask the recruiter to state the exact residence category and explain the permitted work, support and renewal conditions.

Should I only look in Tokyo?

No. Manufacturing, care and hospitality roles can be in other prefectures. Compare the work location, housing deduction and transport, rather than using Tokyo rent for every offer.

Can my employer deduct accommodation from my salary?

Ask for every proposed deduction in writing and compare the room with local alternatives. Your savings calculation should start from the amount left after the actual agreed deductions.

Will I earn the Tokyo average as a new SSW worker?

The benchmark includes many occupations and experience levels. It is not an SSW pay scale. Use the vacancy’s basic pay, scheduled hours and housing charges to assess your own offer.

How should I choose a Japanese course?

Start with the test and language level required for your intended sector. Ask for the course syllabus, total fees and refund policy, and avoid paying on the strength of a guaranteed-job claim.
