Working in Latvia
Latvia deserves a place on a European shortlist, especially when a specific employer needs your trade or technical skills. Riga is the main starting point for international roles, while industrial vacancies can be elsewhere. A lower rent figure does not automatically mean larger savings. Check take-home pay, heating bills and whether you need Latvian for the job.

Metal and machinery trades are another area to investigate. Compare the basic wage separately from shift bonuses. Establish whether accommodation and transport are included or deducted.
Technology and healthcare
Specialist digital roles may offer an international workplace. Healthcare needs a separate check of professional recognition and language requirements. An English-language advert alone does not establish that the employer will recruit from abroad.
How to find a job
Start with Latvia’s State Employment Agency vacancies and employers in your specialism. Before a lengthy interview process, ask whether the company will arrange the permissions needed for a Filipino applicant. Employer arranges its part
The employer handles the invitation or sponsorship and applicable employment checks. Use the current PMLP instructions, as older recruitment guides may predate Latvia’s 2026 immigration changes.
Apply for permission to live and work
Complete the appropriate visa or residence application with employment rights before starting. Confirm the responsible Latvian representation and the current document checklist for your situation.
Documents to prepare
Prepare a valid passport, signed offer or contract, qualifications and work references. The application can also require insurance, accommodation and criminal-record evidence. Confirm translation and certification requirements before paying to prepare documents.

Staying longer
Longer-term residence is a separate application with conditions, including residence history and integration requirements. Latvia announced immigration changes in September 2026. Check the updated PMLP rules for your permit rather than relying on an older five-year checklist.

A Latvian employment permission relates to its approved basis. Ask about any limits before adding freelance clients or changing employer. Running an online business from Latvia also raises local registration and tax questions, even when clients pay from abroad.

A useful option for a verified skilled job with manageable housing costs. The main trade-offs are a smaller labour market, language needs and winter expenses. Compare the actual offer with other destinations instead of judging it by Riga’s city average.
How this rating is calculated
Relative comparison across the destinations listed here. We first combine political rights and civil liberties (40%), the city rent-to-pay balance (30%) and entry preparation (30%). The highest combined score becomes 5.0 and the lowest 1.0, with the others spaced proportionally between them. A 5.0 means strongest in this selection under these criteria, not a perfect destination. Ratings can change when data or the selection changes. They do not measure job availability or predict visa approval. Entry preparation is an editorial assessment, so compare the actual visa route and your own job offer as well.
Calculation details. Rights component = 1 + 4 × Freedom House score ÷ 100. Housing component = 5 − 5 × monthly rent ÷ monthly net pay, bounded between 1 and 5. Entry preparation is 3 for employer-led routes with occupation conditions and 2 where language, recognition, selective sponsorship or processing restrictions add substantial preparation. The weighted total is rescaled as 1 + 4 × (total − lowest total) ÷ (highest total − lowest total), then rounded to one decimal. Countries with the same total receive the same rating. Questions about working in Latvia
Is Latvian required for every job?
Requirements depend on the role. Ask the employer what language is used for instructions, safety training and customers. Learning basic Latvian will also help with daily tasks outside an international office.
Can I work in Germany with a Latvian permit?
A Latvian employment permit is not general permission to work throughout the EU. A move to another country requires checking that country’s employment and residence rules.
How should I compare employer accommodation?
Request the address, room occupancy, monthly deduction and utility arrangements. Check how long you can stay if the job ends. Compare that total with renting independently near the workplace.
What costs are easy to overlook in Riga?
Winter heating, the rental deposit, warm clothing and getting to late shifts can change your budget. Ask for a recent winter utility bill and estimate the first month separately from regular monthly spending.
Does a labour shortage guarantee sponsorship?
No. A shortage describes part of the labour market. A particular employer still needs to select you and complete the requirements for employing a non-EU worker.
Which salary should I enter in the calculator?
